RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts leading to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
